Our expertise
Aphasia
Aphasia is a language disorder that affects communication, not intelligence. It can affect someone’s ability to speak, comprehend, read, or write. People with aphasia know what they want to say, but they have a hard time finding the words. Aphasia can be cause by a stroke, a brain injury, or a progressive neurological condition.
Apraxia of Speech
Apraxia is a motor speech problem. It commonly results from a stroke or brain injury. Damage to the motor centers of the brain can cause difficulty in sending the right messages to speech muscles to make the correct movements. It is possible for people to have both aphasia and apraxia.
Cognitive Communication
Speech and language aren’t the only important parts of communication. Our cognition plays an important role in how we connect with others. Speech therapists can help with thinking problems with attention, concentration, memory, planning, problem-solving, organization, executive function, initiation and reasoning.
Dysarthria
Dysarthria is a speech problem caused by weakness of the muscles used for speaking. This includes muscles used to shape speech sounds, the vocal cords, and respiratory support. Someone with dysarthria might have slurred speech, voice changes, or low speaking volume. It can be caused by a stroke or other brain condition.
Dysphagia
Dysphagia is the medical term for swallowing difficulty. Speech-language pathologists treat oropharyngeal dysphagia, which may result from a neurological issue such as a stroke or progressive condition, cancer, surgery, or structural issues. Dysphagia affects quality of life, and can lead to health complications if it is not addressed.
Voice
Voice problems can happen for a number of reasons, including vocal nodules, muscle tension, vocal cord weakness or paralysis, neurological causes, reflux, breathing difficulties, misuse, surgery, and cancer. At Reconnections we can also work with individuals who wish to modify their voice to better represent themselves.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication
Communication is a human right: everyone deserves to express their ideas. Using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) can open access to communication. AAC means using gestures, pictures, writing, communication books, or speech devices when speech or language are severely affected.
Accent Modification
Accents are natural variations in speaking patterns that develop based on an individual’s cultural and linguistic experience. Accents are not a speaking problem. At Reconnections we value linguistic diversity. Accent coaching is a service we can provide to individuals who would like to modify their speech pattern in English to enhance their intelligibility and improve communication.
Fluency Disorders
Speech fluency refers to our ability to speak easily and smoothly. Disruptions in the flow of speech are sometimes called disfluencies. Fluency disorders such as stuttering and cluttering can be developmental. Neurological conditions can also cause fluency disorders. We can work with you to develop personalized strategies to improve your communication and confidence.
